佛《佛学大辞典》
(术语)Buddha,佛陀之略,又作休屠、佛陀、浮陀、浮图、浮头、勃陀、勃驮、部陀、母陀、没驮。译言觉者,或智者。觉有觉察觉悟之二义,觉察烦恼,使不为害,如世人之觉知为贼者,故云觉察,是名一切智。觉知诸法之事理,而了了分明,如睡梦之寤,谓之觉悟,是名一切种智。自觉复能觉他,自他之觉行穷满,名为佛。自觉者,简于凡夫,觉他者简于二乘,觉行穷满,简异于菩萨。何则?以凡夫不能自觉,二乘虽自觉而无觉他之行,菩萨自觉觉他而觉行未为圆满故也。又以知者既具足二智而觉知一切诸法,了了分明故也。南山戒本疏一曰:“佛,梵云佛陀,或云浮陀、佛驮步他、浮图、浮头。盖传者之讹耳。此无其人,以义翻之为觉。”宗轮论述记曰:“佛陀梵音,此云觉者,随旧略语,但称曰佛。”佛地论一曰:“于一切法,一切种相,能自开觉,亦开觉一切有情。如睡梦觉醒,如莲华开,故名佛。”智度论二曰:“佛陀秦言知者,有常无常等一切诸法,菩提树下了了觉知,故名佛陀。”同七十曰:“佛名为觉,于一切无明睡眠中最初觉故,名为觉。”法华文句一曰:“西竺言佛陀,此言觉者、知者,对迷名知,对愚名觉。”大乘义章二十末曰:“佛者就德以立其名,佛是觉知,就斯立称。觉有两义:一觉察,名觉,如人觉贼。二觉悟,名觉,如人睡寤。觉察之觉对烦恼障,烦恼侵害事等如贼,唯圣觉知不为其害,故名为觉。涅槃云:如人觉贼,贼无能为,佛亦如是。觉悟之觉对其知障,无明昏寝事等如睡,圣慧一起,朗然大悟,如睡得寤,故名为觉。既能自觉,复能觉他。觉行穷满,故名为佛。言其自觉简异凡夫,云觉他者明异二乘,觉行穷满彰异菩萨。”善见律四曰:“佛者名自觉亦能觉他,又言知,何谓为知?知谛故,故名为佛。”仁王经上曰:“一切众生,断三界烦恼果报尽者名为佛。”
