释《佛学大辞典》
(杂语)释迦或设枳也(Śakya)之略称。佛世尊之姓也,佛法始来汉土,僧犹称俗姓,或称竺,或弟子多呼师之姓。如支遁本姓关,学于支谦,故为支。帛道猷本姓冯,学于帛尸梨蜜多,故为帛(避暑录话下)。晋道安始云:佛以释迦为氏,今为佛子者,宜从佛之氏,即姓释。及后阿含经渡来,经说果然,因是举天下从之。增一阿含经二十一曰:“四大河入海,亦无本名字,但名为海,此亦如是。有四姓,云何为四?刹利、婆罗门、长者、居士种。于如来所剃除须发,三法衣,出家学道,无复本性,但言沙门释迦弟子。(中略)是故诸比丘,诸有四姓剃除须发,以信坚固出家学道者,彼当灭本名字自称释迦弟子。”僧祇律二十八亦同。慧能大师上唐高宗辞疾表曰:“韶州曹溪山释迦慧能辞疾表。”四朝闻见录附录曰:“晋王大令保母帖考王畿云:或有谓佛之徒称释,起于道安。大令时未应有释老之称,此又不稽古之甚者。阿含经云:四河入海,与海同流咸。四姓出家,与佛同姓释。释佛姓也。此土谓佛为释久矣。志称释老,以佛对老,非谓佛之徒也。晋史云何充性好释典,崇脩佛寺,是也。然道安以前比丘,各称其姓,道安欲令皆从佛姓,初不之信。后得阿含经,始信之。尔后此土比丘皆姓释,如释慧远是也。”香祖笔记七曰:“僧佑释迦谱云:懿摩王四子,被摈到雪山,住直树林中。四子生子。王欢喜言:此真释子,能自存立。故名释。注,释迦为能。又云:在直树林中,故名为释。注,梵语呼直,亦曰释。别传云:此国有释迦树,甚茂盛,相师云:必出国王。因移四子立国,因名释种。”易居录二十二曰:“沙门自魏晋已来,依师为姓。道安尊释迦,乃以释为氏。后见阿含经云四河入海,无复河名。四姓沙门,皆称释种。自是遂为定式。为沙门称释之始。程大昌雍录曰:葱岭之西,余国冠昭武为姓者,皆释种也。钱牧翁释迦方志辨云:释种者,即刹利帝王种,释姓最贵。中天竺王,奕世君临。居四天竺之会,其散而之四方者,王曰塞王,民曰塞种人。引颜师古汉书注。释塞声相近,本一姓也。”

又(术语)解也。唯识述记一本曰:“释者解释开演之义,安教立理名曰释也。”二字以上之名句,有六种之释体,谓之六合释。

(杂名)释迦佛之弟子也。从释迦师之教化而出生,故名释子。大般若经四百五十三曰:“非沙门,非释迦子。”楞严经六曰:“奈何如来灭度之后,食众生肉,名为释子。”维摩经慧远疏曰:“从佛释师教化出生,故名释子。”增一阿含经云:佛告诸比丘,有四姓出家者,无复本性,但言沙门释子。所以然者。生由我生,成由法成,其犹四大河皆从阿耨达池出。此方东晋安法师受业佛图澄,乃谓师莫过佛,宜通称释氏。后斯经来,悬合圣意。而道安法师乃印手菩萨一转也。复有四句分别:一、是释子,非沙门,乃王种也。二、是沙门,非释子,婆罗门也。三、是沙门,是释子,比丘也。四、非沙门,非释子,二贱姓也。梵Śākyaputrīya。
