折服《俗语佛源》
意制伏,谓使之屈伏。佛教的降魔,就是制伏魔军,使其不能为害。《楞严经》卷一中阿难被摩登伽女的娑毗迦罗咒迷惑,几乎毁坏戒体的故事,就是因为阿难不能折伏摩登伽女。佛教讲折伏,无非是两种办法:一是显神通(包括定力)来制伏对方。但佛陀告诫弟子们非不得已,不要轻易显神通。二是通过辩论来制伏对方。在佛教史上,这是常用的形式。古代印度,许多论师如龙树、提婆、无著、世亲等,都是通过学术辩论制伏对方,为佛教赢得社会地位的。我国唐代伟大的翻译家玄奘在印度留学时,亦以辩才驰名,在公开场合与当时各学派的著名论师辩论,制伏了所有对手,荣获“大乘天”的称号。我国藏语系佛教学者,更是以辩论为主要的学习方法。他们称之为“辨经”,即就佛经中的道理进行辩论。佛教除讲“折伏”外,还讲“摄受”。《胜鬘经》说:“应折伏者而折伏之,应摄受者而摄受之。何以故?以折伏摄受故,令法久住。”这里不仅说明了度生的两种方法,而且说明了两种方法所要达到的目的——令法久住。所以折伏并非将对方一棒打死,而是令其“回头是岸”“止恶向善”;摄受则更是“不舍众生”的慈悲行为。如宋·沈括《梦溪笔谈·官政一》:“盖无赖之民,不畏杖责,故设此事以折伏之。”(无名氏)
