泥多佛大《俗语佛源》
原为禅宗之语,见《景德传灯录·昙华禅师》:“水涨船高,泥多佛大。”俗语用泥多佛大比喻用力多、附益众,则造就也大。如宋·王安石《重游草堂次韵》诗云:“僧残尚食少,佛古但泥多。”宋代李璧注:“泥多佛大,俚语。”(李明权)
泥牛入海《俗语佛源》
泥牛,即泥土所作之牛,俗称“春牛”。我国封建社会时期,立春前一日,官府用泥土做的春牛置于府前,至立春日绝早,用红绿鞭击之以迎春,并预示春耕之早晚。如唐·卢肇在谪连州时书《春牛榜子书》说:“不得职田饥欲死,儿侬何用达春牛!”刘蒙又有诗句云:“村妇祈蚕分面茧,老农占岁说泥牛”,这是以迎春牛乞丰年的一种风俗。但泥牛入海一词,乃源于《景德传灯录》卷八:“洞山(良介)又问:‘和尚见个什么道理便住此山’?师云:‘我见两个泥牛斗入海,直至如今无消息。’”《五灯会元·元日禅师》说:“三脚驴儿跳上天,泥牛入海无消息。”后来用泥牛入海一词比喻一去不返、杳无音信。(无名氏)
泥菩萨落水,自身难保《俗语佛源》
泥菩萨,泥塑的菩萨像,民间多泛指泥塑的神像等。“泥菩萨落水自身难保”比喻连自己也保不住,怎么顾得上别人。如《警世通言·旌阳宫铁树镇妖》:“我想江西不沉却好,若沉了时节,正是‘泥菩萨落水,自身难保’,还保得别人?”这句俗语还有几种变式。如于逢《金沙洲》三部十七:“郭有辉病了,看来是泥菩萨过江,自身难保。”又如李六如《六十年的变迁》十三章四:“他们心里很踌躇,答应带路吗?在这兵荒时候,泥菩萨过河,自身难保。”(李明权)
